Mention classic American cars and the mind is drawn back to the 1950s. The Classic Car Club of America labels cars built before 1959 as classics. That tag is certainly deserved for cars built and designed during that decade as the American automobile manufacturers revolutionised the designs and technology of cars.

Names of the vintage American cars of the 1950s resonate to this very day. The Oldsmobile Rocket 88 Convertible, the Chevrolet Corvette and Bel Air Convertibles, the Dodge B500 Hardtop, the Studebaker Golden Hawk and the Cadillac Convertible and Seville – hallmarks of luxury – remain great examples of American automobile design of that era.

The design of American cars during the 1950s was spectacular and their engines were powerful, and good example of that was the Oldsmobile Rocket. Produced initially in 1950 the vehicle was powered by a V8 engine and at the time was the most powerful automobile on the road.

The 1950s saw the rise of car designers with the ability to wave their magic on the drawing boards and design the cars which appealed to the American public. One such designer was Virgil Exner who led to the likes of Dodge being able to produce what are now renowned as classics from that era.

With the American motorist demanding regular change in style, companies such as Studebaker were happy to oblige.

In 1957 they produced one of the all time great automobiles, the Silver Hawk.

The Silver Hawk had plenty of varieties to tempt the dollars out of the wallets of the automobile loving public, coming in the Flight Hawk, Power Hawk, Gold Hawk as well as in a hard topped range.

Mention of great American Cars of the 1950s often brings to mind the name Cadillac, a brand associated with luxury and opulence. By 1957 the Cadillac Eldorado Brougham was retailing at an eye watering 000, a huge amount in those days. No wonder that the Cadillac range was associated with the stars of the era, and it will always be labelled a classic.

With only 50 produced and sold between 1963 and 1964 and only 20 still around today this classic is in short supply, but fear not Top Gear has revealed that the Peel is making a comeback!

We saw Clarkson struggle to squeeze himself into a Reliant Robin in the last series of Top Gear but believe it or not, back in 2007 he managed to fit his 6ft 5in frame into a 54 inches long and 41 inches wide classic Peel.

The “diminutive wonder was also given a big boost after Dragon’s Den star James Caan pledged a massive investment to Peel Engineering’s new owner for a re-launch”, according to Top Gear. With no reverse gear and no way other than pushing or lifting it to back into a space or turn a sharp corner, it’s hard to take this car seriously. The Peel’s cute appeal and innovative design are enough though to make me agree with Clarkson’s opinion that it is in fact the “best small car on earth”.

The Top Gear website is urging people to buy Peel-related stuff, so the company makes more money which can be used to build more of these wonderful P50′s. And if all else fails it could be the ultimate funky personal mobility vehicle.

Car-Salvage.org has reported that the struggling sterling means that “classic car owners are looking to sell vehicles overseas, which will mean buyers are likely to get more money for their motors”. John Glynn has said “a car purchased in Europe three years ago for €22,000 (£14,800), and sold today at the same price it was bought for, would bring in £20,000 – a tidy profit for the vendor of £5,200 after three years”.

A report by Eurotax Glass’s revealed that sellers of good-condition, left-hand drive cars have found that the euro is so strong that it offers us Brits a “great chance to make a killing on a classic”. Classic cars are a great investment tool, if you know the market and you enjoy cars, and with a reputation for being valuable – it’s nice to see you can still get the same pleasure selling your classic as you did buying it.

It’s not just us classic car enthusiasts that benefit from the low value sterling, dealers are also reaping the benefits of the high demand from the euro-zone. The Telegraph website has also reported that “many of the deals are done before cars have even entered showrooms, and some long-standing stock is even catching the eyes of buyers in Europe and the USA”.

Like most things there are always drawbacks, in this case the “exchange rate effect”, reported by Car-Salvage.org, means the UK may lose some lovely machinery this year to buyers overseas. Of course, it also means there will be an appetite among successful sellers to acquire replacement models, which will stimulate the UK market once again”, according to the Telegraph online.
